Heroes Family Adventures is a model healing program designed to help the Hero and the hero's family HEAL from the damages done from knowingly or unknowingly fighting the "First Hand" and "Second Hand" battles of PTSD. The adventure is to help Heroes and their families readjust to life after PTSD through powerful wilderness courses that draw on the healing benefit of teamwork and challenge through use of the natural world.
HEROES and their families take part in wilderness expeditions that are physically, mentally and emotionally challenging in order to build the self-confidence, pride, trust and communication skills necessary to successfully HEAL. These expeditions purposefully scaffold real-life situations with authentic achievements to create positive emotional and mental outcomes.
Wilderness activities are used as metaphors for daily life experiences in the pursuit of individual and group excellence, illuminating how the support and collaboration needed to meet Heroes Adventures goals can positively impact participants' interactions with others at home. Heroes Adventures gives Family members the opportunity to re-experience the first-hand and second-hand traumas in ways that are designed to help dissipate the power of the trauma.
Heroes Family Adventures first courses were established through collaboration with Veterans Administration Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) units, and the Stanford University PTSD program.Contact Us
